How to choose an assisted living facility in Palm Beach County
A thoughtful choice starts with care needs, licensing, safety, communication, and what everyday life will feel like—not simply the first available room.
Begin with your loved one’s needs
Write down the help your loved one needs today and what may change over the next year. Consider bathing, dressing, mobility, medication, meals, memory, nighttime supervision, social connection, and transportation. A facility should assess whether it can safely meet those needs within its licensed scope.
Confirm licensing and appropriate care
- Verify the facility’s current Florida license and address.
- Ask which services are included and which require outside providers.
- Discuss dementia-related needs, mobility, medications, dietary needs, and emergency planning.
- Ask how the facility communicates changes in condition to families.
Visit and observe daily life
Tour at a time when residents are active if possible. Notice cleanliness, safety, noise level, staff interaction, meals, outdoor access, and whether residents appear comfortable and treated with dignity. Ask to see the room being offered rather than relying only on general photos.
Understand availability and total cost
Request a clear explanation of the base rate, care-level charges, deposits, move-in fees, supplies, transportation, and other possible costs. Ask what happens if a resident’s needs increase and how much notice is provided for rate changes.
Choose the setting that feels sustainable
The right facility should be able to meet the resident’s assessed needs, communicate openly, and provide an environment where the family can imagine their loved one feeling safe and known. Compare more than décor—consider care fit, consistency, location, and the quality of everyday interactions.
