Tour checklist
Questions to ask during an assisted-living tour
Bring this checklist, take notes, and ask the same core questions at every facility so your family can compare care, safety, communication, and cost clearly.
Care and admission
- How do you assess whether a prospective resident is appropriate?
- Which daily-living and medication services can you provide?
- How are care plans created and updated?
- What needs would require transfer or discharge?
Staffing and communication
- Who is present during the day and overnight?
- How are staff trained for the residents they serve?
- Who should families contact with questions?
- How and when will you report a change in condition?
Safety and emergencies
- What are your emergency, hurricane, evacuation, and power-outage plans?
- How do you reduce fall and wandering risks?
- How are medications secured and documented?
- When was the facility last inspected, and may I verify its license?
Daily life
- What meals, snacks, activities, housekeeping, and laundry are included?
- How do you accommodate preferences and dietary needs?
- Can residents spend time outdoors and receive visitors?
- What does a typical day look like?
Costs and next steps
- What is the complete monthly cost for my loved one’s current needs?
- Which charges may change, and how much notice is given?
- Are deposits, move-in fees, supplies, or transportation charged separately?
- Which room is available, and what information is needed before admission?
